My work has always contained and revolved around an unconscious and often underlying
theme of social criticism. This has slowly moved to a conscious and very intentional
level through my own personal struggle to comprehend societies influence on
who I am. How have I as a young person, as a gay man, or as an artist been shaped
by societies stereotypes, myths, and media representations? How have the smaller
groups, relating to these facets of myself, affected me? How have others compromised
themselves to fit into a mass produced idea of what they should be, and if we
do not bend to these "ideals" where and how do we fit in?
This
work contains no answers. Instead it illustrates questions specifically concerning
my discomfort, malcontent, and frustration with the constructs confined within
each frame. By choosing to be vague I hope the viewer will be free to examine
the questions and issues each piece raises. My own mental conflicts have been
transformed into these images as a way of physically wrestling with the abstract
or broad ideas I am at odds with. To that end, I have made these images in hopes
of furthering my understanding of them. I also seek to provide a record of a
person who does not easily fit into a prescribed mold and thus far has not been
represented by mass media, society in general, and even photographic arts.
